The moment you see this magnificent house with its opulent windows and the green roof, you enter via the large front door into the beautiful entrance hall with its stained glass windows. Immediately you are transported back to the days after the Wall Street Crash, when Art Deco simply meant luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress.
The house was completed in 1929, built to the precise requirements of a wealthy North London widow and her daughter. She specified stunning stained glass windows throughout the house, the oak panelled hallway with the sweeping stair to the upstairs landing which led to five very different styled bedrooms of grand proportions. Connecting three of the bedrooms she requested the wonderful Sun Room with uninterrupted views out to sea and across the three quarter acre garden.
Returning to the downstairs, the lounge calls out for everyone to gather together, but there is also the magnificent wood paneled dining room, comfortably seating 18 adults, and the adjoining kitchen. The sixth bedroom has wheel chair access, and then there is the ‘Morning Room’ furnished with 1930’s bankers desks if you really need to work while away (with 500Mbps up and download speeds) but can also double as a seventh bedroom if you want to use it that way.
The house is a constant labour of love, which has been recently revived with early 20th Century Art-Deco furniture painstakingly sourced by the owners from all over England, with original artwork from the era by Viennese and English art school students and various ornaments and glassware from the 1930s, from wherever it can be sourced.
